Consume differently, transport differently

We maintain direct contact with the producers, we only import organic products, we work with completely different pricing models than conventional importers - somehow everything should be a little different and better. But in one area, Café Chavalo has been just as conventional as all the others: our goods traveled from south to north on container ships belonging to major shipping companies. This is different with our sailing coffee: it was shipped from Central America to Europe on the cargo ship Avontuur. The team led by Captain Cornelius Bockermann thus connects sustainable producers and responsible consumers.

This coffee contains the power of the wind

What we do today determines how we live tomorrow: the more than 90,000 container ships currently in operation are by far the biggest polluters in the transport sector. The Avontuur, built in 1920, is the symbol of a movement that not only shows the immense amount of pollutant emissions caused by the large separation between the production site and the place of distribution, but also offers the solution through low-emission transport.

Climate protection product

Avontuur brought several tons of fair trade, organic green coffee from Nicaragua to Germany for us. Shipping by cargo ship released significantly less CO2 than conventional transport. In cooperation with myclimate, we also calculated the carbon footprint of each bag of coffee. In addition to cultivation in Nicaragua, all transport, roasting and packaging were taken into account. We pay a climate protection contribution to a reforestation project in Nicaragua for all emissions resulting from this, as well as a flat-rate uncertainty fee.

Organic coffee from small farmers in Nicaragua

The organic green coffee comes from the Tierra Nueva cooperative association in Nicaragua. Around 250 small farmers have joined together to form the association in order to market their harvest together and improve living conditions in the countryside. At an altitude of between 700 and 1,200 meters, they cultivate coffee and turmeric, among other crops, on small plots of land in mixed cultures. Tierra Nueva is Café Chavalo's most important trading partner in Nicaragua and is itself a member of the cooperative in Germany. The small farmers in Nicaragua can therefore have a say in important issues relating to Café Chavalo eG in Germany at the general meeting.
