Coffee for equality

The "Honey" coffee is grown by a women's cooperative. In countries where there is little equality, projects like this are extremely important. It supports women's economic independence and self-determination, strengthens their self-confidence - and enables families or single mothers to earn additional income. The farmers either own their own plots of land or work a piece of land together as a small group.

The special feature of the “Honey” processing

In the honey processing, the cherries are peeled after they have been harvested, but the beans are not washed. They dry together with the remains of the sweet pulp. This gives the coffee its fruity note. After drying, the beans are polished. The "honey" processing is particularly environmentally friendly, as far less water is used than in conventional processes.

Origin

Our Honey coffee comes from the Miraflor nature reserve in the north-eastern district of Estelí. The coffee grows on shady plots at an altitude of 1,000 – 1,450 meters. It is picked and sorted by hand.

UCA Miraflor

The Miraflor association has 420 members and unites several smaller cooperatives. The additional income from fair trade has enabled Miraflor to set up a fund to support social projects. What's more, the money is used to solve technical problems in the fields and to finance further training and microcredits. The association also helps its members to market the coffee and their own ecotourism projects.

Conviction offender

World trade is possible beyond profit maximization and a cut-throat mentality. Café Chavalo believes in this, and so do our partners at Miraflor in Nicaragua. They are committed to a solidarity-based economy that serves the well-being of all involved and treats our environment responsibly.
